CRUNCH talks are being held following the shock closure of a popular water park.

Stay and Splash, at the Paddocks, on Canvey, closed with immediate effect earlier this month and a councillor says a £200,000 bill for repairs is to blame.

Now Canvey Independent councillors say they want to re-open the park for this summer.

Peter Greig, said: “We are upset at the closure of the park, everyone on the island has used it at some time.

“We are going to call a meeting to get the feelings from residents about what they want to see done about it.

“I know there’s some talk about another splash park being opened but we don’t know where the money will come from.

“We want to get a meeting arranged very soon and are hoping to have this meeting next week.”

Fellow Independent councillor John Anderson said: “It was closed as it would cost £200,000 for a new pump and filter.

“I think anything that can be done to reopen it would be a great idea but who would do it I have no idea.

“I would be in support of anyone who can come forward with the money to fix this.

“It is great for the kids and I think it’s a necessity and I would like to see it reopen for the summer.”

On February 14, the Echo reported how it would close immediately after operating for four years managed under lease from Castle Point Council by Kevin and Sarah Walby.

A council statement said: “Unfortunately, the ageing venue requires extensive upgrading and refurbishment works and the cost to ensure that the site continues to comply with health and safety and pool safety legislation and best practice has become too great for either the council or the Walbys to sustain.”

Norman Smith, leader of Castle Point Council, added: “The closure of the paddling pool is extremely disappointing as it has been a much-loved venue for families.”

Kevin and Sarah Walby were contacted for comment.
