FANS of TV gardener Monty Don have been paying touching tributes on social media after the death of his dog.

Thousands of people reacted on Facebook to the news of the passing of Nigel the golden retriever, who appeared on BBC2's Gardeners’ World.

The presenter said his companion had helped him with his mental health, adding that it is a 'powerful medicine’ to have someone who provides completely unqualified love.

There have, so far, been more than 1,000 comments on the Hereford Times Facebook page, with people showing their support for Monty, and expressing their condolences.

Tributes have included those from people empathising with Monty, and sharing their own personal experiences of losing a family pet.

Allan Uggars Currie said: “Had to say goodbye to my over 12-year-old yellow lab last March.

“The most loyal companion and adorable dog.

“Things haven't been the same since but so lucky to have shared so many moments of happiness with the lass…”

Elizabeth Curle wrote: “What a perfect life you gave him, such a beautiful boy and a special spirit.

“It is always so heartbreaking when they leave us, but what joy they bring to our lives.”

Many fans have said how much they enjoyed seeing Nigel on Gardeners’ World, and that they would miss him on the Friday-night TV show.

Heather Andrew posted: “I so loved watching Nigel, and he added so much to the programme.

“What a blessing to you and your family.

“My dog Archie means the world and more to me and in the midst of this pandemic he has kept me sane and upbeat.

“Our dogs are a gift of love to us.

“Run free Nigel. We shall miss you.”

Vena Dussoye said: “I love watching your programme every week and I will miss Nigel not being around, but he will be with you forever in your heart and in your life. RIP Nigel.”

Other Facebook users have compared the love that Monty Don’s four-legged friend gave to him with that of a relationship in Ricky Gervais’ show After Life.

The second series of the comedy-drama, which is available to stream on Netflix, follows the life of Tony, who is still grieving his late wife, and the companionship that their dog Brandy provides for him.

Tish Wright commented: “Ricky Gervais demonstrated this exactly in the second series of After Life. An animal’s unconditional love is priceless.”

Studies have shown that there are many emotional benefits to having a pet if you suffer with emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Mental health campaigner Marion Janner said: “Dogs love us unconditionally.

“They’re the ultimate in equal opportunities – entirely indifferent to race, gender, star sign, CV, clothes size or ability to throw cool moves on the dance floor.

“The simplicity and depth of this love is a continuous joy, along with the health benefits of daily walks and the social delights of chats with other dog walkers.

“They teach kids to be responsible, altruistic and compassionate and, valuably but sadly, how to cope when someone you love dies.”
