A 'bomb' which closed a road in Powys today turned out to be the most realistic replica bomb disposal squads had ever seen.
Dyfed-Powys Police cordoned off an area near Cantref Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons after workmen carrying out essential maintenance nearby discovered a suspected mortar shell.
The object was stuck in the mud, which had been uncovered due to the recent warm weather and lower water level.
As a precaution the area was secured and the surrounding roads closed while officers awaited the arrival of an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team.
But after closer inspection the item was revealed to be a highly realistic replica mortar measuring about 30cm in length.
PS Ciaran Ryan said: “The team who assessed the item said it was the most realistic one they had ever seen.
“The person who discovered it did the right thing by calling us and not attempting to get close to or move it.
“We would always urge caution if anyone discovers a suspicious object, and ask that they contact us immediately.”
Nearby roads were then re-opened.
