FIREFIGHTERS across Herefordshire have had a busy weekend with a number of calls to out-of-control fires.

A Whitchurch Fire Station spokesperson urged people not to have outdoor fires.

"Be sensible and don't have outdoor fires," the spokesperson said.

"They could cause catastrophic damage to woodland and forest areas."

Several Herefordshire crews were called to a large fire in the open near Tanner's Hill, Wyre Forest, yesterday afternoon.

A fire service spokesperson said crews from Leominster, Bromyard and Ledbury joined colleagues from Wyre Forest, Tenbury, Cleobury Mortimer, Droitwich, Broadway and Redditch fire stations after the alarm was raised on Sunday.

Crews worked through the afternoon to bring the 1.5 hectare wildfire, which had been rapidly spreading, under control.
