TEMPORARY signage is going up across Hereford today (Tuesday) as a 20 mile per hour speed limit comes into force in much of the city centre.

The changes are part of Herefordshire Council's emergency active travel response, and are aimed at making walking and cycling more appealing while ensuring there is enough space to socially distance.

The new signs in Hereford follow on from 20 mile per hour signage being installed in Ledbury and Kington on Friday.

Herefordshire Council said as shops re-open, people return to work and more people visit Hereford and the market towns, the government has asked local authorities to introduce the temporary measures to give pedestrians and cyclists more space.

The measures, which include using temporary barriers and signage to widen footways, some timed or partial road closures and dedicated cycle lanes, allow more space to walk and cycle in busy areas.

Speed reductions to 20 miles per hour are being introduced on some streets in a bid to help pedestrians and cyclists feel safer where road space is shared.
