A CLOSED country pub in need of refurbishment is on the market near Bromyard.

Prominently situated 500 metres south of the village of Whitbourne on the A44, freehold public house The Wheatsheaf is for sale with an asking price of £225,000.

Agents Centrick Commercial said the pub benefits from generous customer areas, male and female toilets and appropriate storage, together with a large basement area consisting of six rooms and a large three-bedroom manager’s apartment, plus large brookside garden and separate car park, and offers an exciting redevelopment opportunity, subject to securing statutory consents.

County planners have previously rejected proposals to convert the closed pub into semi-detached houses, saying there is not enough evidence that the pub would not be a viable business and could not continue to meet community needs.

Applicant Peter Styles challenged the decision but his appeal was dismissed by a planning inspector in June this year, a decision welcomed by the Campaign For Real Ale.

The pub, which has been closed for some years, will need refurbishment if it is to be brought back into use, and agents said they are advised that, provided the premises are used for retail, hospitality or leisure, there will be no rates payable for the period 2020-21.
