Summary

LIVE: Worcester City v Highgate United

Our live feed has now finished.

  • LIVE: City 3 (English 48, Brain 59p, Roberts 90+4) Highgate 1 (Martin 27)
  • CITY held their nerve to fight back from a goal down to bag a first league win of the season at the seventh attempt.
  • Romario Martin’s bolt from the blue put City behind at the break but Luke English powered home a header within three minutes of the restart with Sean Brain fouled for and scoring a penalty and Aaron Roberts sealing the deal in stoppage time.
  • The hosts had almost all the play but the effects of Saturday’s humbling at Lye seemed to shackle Worcester after a bright opening 15 minutes, particularly after conceding.
  • With the rain lashing down and a flat atmosphere, a sense of here we go again might have crept in but with each goal came greater impetus and City looked the likelier to score late on, despite defending a 2-1 advantage.
  • Brain had a blast saved from a tight angle during a good start but that early purpose steadily slipped.
  • Dave Reynolds had a decent chance to open the scoring moments before Highgate’s goal but had to lean back to connect with Jamie Smith’s free-kick to the far post and his downward header was off target.
  • City went behind when Tom Turton lost the ball in a challenge and Martin picked up the loose ball, weaving one way then the other before hammering in a cracker low to Dan Jezeph’s right.
  • It deflated the hosts but a leveller early in the second half proved just the tonic.
  • With the box packed, Turton cushioned a corner to Jamie Smith on the edge of the box to blast against the underside of the bar from 20 yards via keeper Lewis Fenney's fingertips and while Roberts and Brain were thwarted in trying to bundle home, English threw himself at a loose looping clearance from in front of the goal line to level.
  • Number two came 11 minutes later when Brain’s run into the left of the box drew out Fenney and after a moment of hesitation, he clattered into the striker who dusted himself down to slam in from the spot.
  • Reynolds had a strong game and was a constant menace, particularly at 2-1, having a shot blocked by Fenney at the far post.
  • Highgate’s best hope came from individual moments rather than passages of play with Ty Knight, their brightest spark all night, gliding past two challenges to tee up Martin but he was closely marshalled while shooting wide.
  • Gate substitute Ant Smith’s chipped ball into Knight might have caused more concern if it had been met with better control as City backed off with the clock ticking down but that self-inflicted scare was an isolated incident.
  • The third arrived four minutes past the 90 with Chris Withington playing into Reynolds to guide across to Jamie Smith who selflessly nudged back inside for Roberts to apply a cool finish past the hopelessly exposed Fenney.
