The Carrot and Wine shop in Wormelow is just one Herefordshire business stepping forward to help youngsters failed by our MPs.

Shop owner Gordon Miller said if children are entitled to free school meals they will discreetly provide families with all they need to make sandwiches during half-term week, free of charge.

Hereford shop offers free food to children over half-term

Mr Miller said he just wanted to help families less fortunate that his own.

"Children are having their lives disrupted beyond all belief. I've got young children of my own and you ask them to wear a mask and they wear a mask, they don't question it.

"They're completely innocent in all of this that's going on, but those in families who are really struggling to make ends meet, or just don't know where the next meal is coming from, if we can help them we will."

Mr Miller's offer comes after Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford called on the Government to provide free school meals during the holidays.

Mr Rashford’s petition to end child food poverty led to a motion put down by Labour that was defeated by 322 votes to 261 on Wednesday.

What is your response?Beefy Boys, Hereford: It's been so heartwarming to see businesses both locally and nationally stepping up to offer help for families effected by cuts to school meals over the half term holidays. Seeing the community coming together to help has inspired us to do the same so next week, Monday to Friday from 12pm to 3pm all of our kid's meals will be FREE when eating in. No family should have to struggle alone, especially in these uncertain and worrying times, so as well as the above if you or anyone you know will struggle this half term please get in touch with us directly at hello@thebeefyboys.com, as we will also be offering a limited amount of takeaway kids meals to be collected each lunchtime Monday to Friday from the restaurant.

What is your response?La Madeleine, Church Street, Hereford: No child should go hungry, so we are going to try to help where we can. This isn’t about politics, just basic human decency. Next week if you would usually get a free school meal you can collect a packed lunch from us here at La Madeleine. If you have your letter showing your eligibility for free school meals just bring it along with you and collect your packed lunch between 10am-noon @ La Madeleine. Supplies will be limited so it’s first come first served but we will try to make sure there’s enough to go round, if you intend to use this service you could even message us so we can manage demand. #endchildfoodpoverty
