A 45-year-old man had to be taken to hospital after being involved in an early morning crash with a taxi.

Emergency services were called to the junction of King Street and Montague Street at around 5.40am on Monday.

Police confirmed that a cyclist, a 45-year-old man, was involved in a collision with a Toyota Prius and suffered 'head injuries'.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called by the ambulance service at 5.39am to reports of a collision between a taxi and a cyclist.

"The cyclist had suffered head injuries, but was conscious and breathing.

"The road was closed for around two hours while the incident was dealt with and was re-opened at about 7.45am."

One ambulance was sent to the scene and the man was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "We were called to the junction of King Street and Montague Street at around 5.40am on Monday.

"We sent an ambulance to the scene and one patient was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

"From our logs his injuries don't appear to be too serious."

This has been the third accident to occur at this junction in the last two weeks.

On October 21 four people suffered minor injuries during a crash involving two vehicles, while on October 12 a police officer was taken to hospital after the van he was travelling in turned on its side.
