A CLOSED pub in a Herefordshire town is being searched today as part of an investigation by counter terrorism police.

Police confirmed to the Hereford Times this morning (November 19) that the search at the property in Wye Street, Ross-on-Wye is being carried out as part of an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing South East.

CTPSE said the search is in relation to the arrest of a 43-year-old man from Gloucestershire.

He was arrested on suspicion of:

  • Encouragement of terrorism contrary to section one of the Terrorism Act 2006
  • Dissemination of terrorist publications contrary to section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006
  • Collection of information contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000
  • Intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of serious crime contrary to section 44 of the Serious Crime Act 2007

He remains in police custody.

Three other searches are being carried out in Gloucestershire in relation to this case.

Specialist officers will be carrying out these searches and may at time be wearing protective suits, but there is no wider threat to the public.

West Mercia Police Herefordshire commander Superintendent Ross Jones said: “People in the Wye Street area of Ross-on-Wye may be concerned about the police activity which has been taking place yesterday and today.

"I understand these concerns and would like to reassure you that there is no wider risk to the community at this time.
