NEW trees have been planted in Hereford as three groups try to make the city a more attractive place.

A partnership of Hereford in Bloom, Hereford City Tree Wardens and Herefordshire Council's contractor Balfour Beatty Living Places marked National Tree Week by planting 30 trees in the Central Avenue area, set between Bath Street and Ledbury Road.

Voluntary group Hereford in Bloom said the historic avenue and its adjacent streets had lost original trees over time but have now been replaced with species suited for both urban landscapes and good for city wildlife.

The project was jointly funded by Hereford in Bloom and Hereford City Council.

Tree warden Mo Burns, one of the organisers, said: “Trees are the natural architecture of our urban environment, contribute to tackling climate change and make our city healthier and more attractive to live in.

“Hereford has only 15 per cent tree-cover, but national analysis shows for a city its size it should be nearer 30 per cent. There are lots of ways we can help make Hereford greener, for instance, finding room in our front or back gardens for a tree or two.

"Together we can definitely make a difference.”
