LAND described as a "dumping ground" and potentially infested with rats in a Herefordshire town centre could have 10 new cottages built on it, if plans are approved by the council.

Outline planning permission for a "terrace of 10 mews-style cottages" is being sought for the land in Kington by Manas Heghoyan of M S Heghoyan Properties.

Plans submitted to Herefordshire Council say the site, in Sunset Row, used to be part of Kington's railway station when there was a local line.

A design and access statement said: "The land is currently a very over-grown area that is used as a dumping ground for vehicles and where there is potentially vermin and other pests.

"There is no planning designation for the land. Sunset Row is primarily a residential road and this scheme looks to create suitable residential units while employing sustainable design, construction methods and materials.

"The mews-style cottages are intended to appeal to younger couples and families who will appreciate the sustainable nature of the design and construction and not need the space of a large, traditional three-or-four-bedroom house."

It added: "The front of each dwelling has a glass frontage.

"The front door, being part of the glass frontage, creates a main feature and focus for the façade of each unit and the row as a whole.

"These glass frontages will maximise the duration and strength of the natural sunlight entering the houses, with the front aspects being south facing.

"Each cottage is set over two floors, with the second-floor bedrooms being rooms in the roof space.

"Each cottage will be situated on a plot that provides a front area and pathway, the dwelling itself with a rear conservatory and a rear garden."

Herefordshire Council is accepting comments on application 201955 until January 28, with a decision expected on or after April 5.
