LEDBURY might be leafy enough already, but unlike Hereford it will not be getting hundreds more trees this year.

Hereford is set to become a greener city thanks to 500 new trees being given to local residents, businesses, organisations, schools and colleges to plant in their garden or on their land.

The project, funded through the government’s Accelerated Towns Fund, "will help to create a green canopy in Hereford".

But a Herefordshire Council spokesperson said: "This was funded by the Towns Fund, which is from Central Government, so they set the criteria."

When asked if Ledbury might still be getting free trees, the spokesman said, "I'm afraid not."

In Hereford, trees will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The scheme will close on March 24, or when all trees have been allocated.
