A RUGBY club is bidding for a new premises licence which, if granted, could see it play live and recorded music, as well as sell alcohol, seven days a week.

Hereford Rugby Football Club has applied for a premises licence from Herefordshire Council so it can "regularise" licensable activities, which have previously taken place with club premises certificates and temporary event notices.

The club, formed in 1870 and now playing at Wyeside in the city, has applied to sell alcohol for consumption on and off the premises between 10am and 11pm Sunday to Monday, with the hours extended until 1am for Fridays and Saturdays.

The club also wanted to play live and recorded music from midday until 11pm Sundays to Thursday, extended until 12.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

It also wants terminal hours for music and alcohol sales to be extended until 1am on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, Bank Holidays, and Sundays preceding a Bank Holiday Monday.

"From our extensive knowledge of the city, we believe that the Responsible Authorities have never been called to an incident there," the application said.

"The purpose of this application is to regularise the licensable activities that take place at the club on an infrequent basis.

"We acknowledge that the club is situated within the city and that there are residential properties adjacent to the premises.

"However, despite there being events held at the club on a regular basis, we are unaware of any past complaints to the responsible authorities with reference to any of the licensing objectives.

"The clubhouse is a substantial purpose built edifice that is regularly used to host social events.

"We have invited the environmental protection department to conduct a site visit prior to making this application, and that offer remains open throughout the consultation period in the hope that any possible concerns are addressed by that department in a timely manner."

Consultation ends on June 22.
