There are reports of queues on the M5 near Worcester after an earlier broken-down vehicle as people start heading away for the weekend.

Cars are trailing back for four miles between junctions seven and eight heading south on the carriageway, exasperating holiday traffic.

A lane was closed due to the incident but has now been reopened but congestion remains significant.

It comes as the M5 is expected to face its busiest day of the year with a combination of good weather and the start of the summer holidays sending thousands of people to the beaches in the south of the country.

Already stretches of the M5 are at a standstill into Gloucestershire, past Bristol and into Somerset,

It ha been reported that the travel time for the 20 miles from Gloucestershire to Clevedon is now 90minutes and is likely getting longer.

The M5 delays followed earlier problems on the M4, where an overturned lorry held up motorists crossing the Prince of Wales Bridge into Wales for an hour.

In Devon a crash this morning saw a lane closed between junction 27 at Tiverton and junction 26 at Wellington just after 7am.
