THE organisers of Ledbury Carnival are determined to put on a fun weekend despite the cancellation of the town’s popular event.

This is the second year the pandemic has hit the Bank Holiday celebration, which in better times would draw up to 10,000 visitors into the town.

Despite this disappointment, organisers are preparing for a range of events throughout the weekend, culminating with a ‘Party in the Car Park’ on Monday afternoon.

This will run from 1-5pm at St Katherine’s Car Park. The event, to be opened by this year’s Carnival Princess and her attendants will feature juggling, face painting, children’s fancy dress, stalls and food.

Hereford Hospital Radio will spin a variety of classic tunes and keep up a running commentary on events. The Raintrees will perform live on stage during the afternoon, with DJ Chris providing a Children’s Disco.

There ill also be a “Cultivation Corner” featuring Ledbury Horticultural Society, Ledbury in Bloom and a variety of other gardening groups.

Carnival treasurer Janet Meredith said: “It has only been possible to stage this event with support from Ledbury Town Council, Platform Housing and numerous local businesses.”

Elsewhere in the town, Ledbury’s businesses have been busy decorating their windows on the theme of “Games”. Judges will be choosing the winners of a cup this afternoon to be presented tomorrow morning by the Carnival Princess.

There will also be an optimistic display of Children’s Artwork based on their ideas of the ‘Ideal Carnival of the Future’.

Tomorrow will also see raffle tickets going on sale by the Market House. The winner of £100 cash will be revealed at 4pm on Monday.

The closure of the car park closure begins at 8am. “We apologise to any motorist affected but it is necessary to ensure everyone’s safety,” Janet said. “All other town centre car parks will remain open and free to use as it is a Bank Holiday.

“Our aim is to provide a fun day out for all ages whist promoting the available activities in the town. We are a small committee and would welcome any new members to join us.”
