POLICE have warned people in Worcestershire to stay off the roads unless they need to with Storm Arwen hitting the county.

Officers issued the warning after the storm brought down trees and blocked roads.

A tweet from Malvern Cops said motorists should take care while driving, with their teams having been out helping move fallen trees throughout Saturday morning.

The tweet said: "Avoid travel on the roads today unless absolutely necessary.

"Malvern officers have been clearing trees in Welland, Guarlford, Hanley Swan and at British Camp."

Despite the bad weather caused by the storm, the Christmas lights switch-on is still set to go ahead as planned.

Storm Arwen has already seen the Malvern switch-on cancelled over concerns for public safety.

Worcestershire County Council's highways department is encouraging residents to report fallen trees and blocked roads so they can be cleared.

A tweet said: "Overnight and this morning we've dealt and are dealing with over 40 fallen trees across Worcestershire

"We have specialist tree contractors working as fast as they can to clear and reopen roads.

"Please let us know of any problems here or by telephone on 01905 765765."
