Firefighters have tackled a large wildfire near Ledbury.

Crews were called to a fire in woods near Putley just after 5pm on Monday (April 25).

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Ledbury, Fownhope, Ross-on-Wye and Hereford fire stations, plus the water carrier from Leominster and the fire service drone from Ledbury, attended.

The fire covered around eight hectares and crews said there were multiple seats of fire.

Firefighters divided the incident into different sectors in order to tackle it, and it was fought using the high pressure fogging unit from a fire service Land Rover, beaters, water backpacks and one hosereel jet.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “There were no casualties and no further emergency services were called. The drone and thermal imaging camera were used to check for hotspots.

“If you're out in our wonderful countryside this weekend, please take extra care because it's very dry out there.

“Our crews did some great work preventing the wildfire from spreading. But the picture of the devastation caused speaks for itself.”

Crews left the scene just before 11pm on Monday.
