A HEREFORDSHIRE primary school has been presented with a prestigious award for their work bringing the world into the classroom.

Stoke Prior Primary School, near Leominster, has been recognised with an Intermediate level of the British Council's International School Award.

The award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education.

It rewards schools that have shown a commitment to international awareness and understanding within their class or school.

The school has been working on an international project comparing recycling and sustainable development in Herefordshire with its partner school based in Singi’si in Tanzania.

Children at Stoke Prior had virtual visits to a recycling centre comparing recycling in Tanzania to Recycling in the UK.

They also leant about different types of fruit trees that are grown near school in Herefordshire and schools in Tanzania.

The International School award is now available worldwide in countries such as India, Greece, Egypt, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

Around 6,000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.

Headteacher Matt Lewis said that it was wonderful to have been able to work with a number of school across north Herefordshire and to continue a long standing partnership with schools around Arusha in Tanzania.

He added that the school worked on the project alongside pupils and staff from Ashperton, Ivington, Shobdon, St Michael’s in Bodenham and Leintwardine schools.

Mr Lewis said: "It is wonderful to continue a long standing international partnership with schools both locally and in Tanzania.

"These links have brought international education alive for our pupils.

"We hope that the continued collaboration will enable these links to have a bright and sustainable future."
