A fire which broke out behind a house in a Worcester street was probably started deliberately, firefighters have said.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue services were called to a fire at the rear of a property in Lansdowne Crescent at the weekend. 

A spokesperson from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Services said: "A Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crew from Droitwich Fire Station was called at 19.56 on August 7 to fire in the open in Lansdowne Crescent, Worcester.

"A small fire to the rear of a property was extinguished using buckets of water.

"The Police were advised as the fire was believed to have been started deliberately.

"The incident was marked as closed at 20.37."

West Mercia Police are investigating the fire to determine whether or not it was started deliberately. 

A spokesperson said: "We are aware of a fire that happened at Lansdowne Crescent, Worcester on Sunday 7 August.

"We are currently carrying out enquiries to establish whether or not the fire was started deliberately.

"Anyone with any information related to the incident is asked to please get in touch by reporting it online via https://www.westmercia.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/ quoting incident 592i of 7 August.

"Alternatively, if you have information but don’t feel comfortable speaking to police, you can speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers.

Firefighters have pleaded with people not to start fires, leave litter or use disposable barbecues as temperatures soar in Worcestershire.

Any blaze is likely to spread rapidly due to the scorched earth, drought conditions and high temperatures at present.

The Met Office’s amber warning for extreme heat comes as temperatures in Worcester are set to peak at about 32 degrees C  - just a few degrees below the record temperatures seen a few weeks ago.
