Permission is being sought to replace a barn at a Herefordshire farm with a “traditional” four-bedroom house.
Harry Whittal has applied for permission for his proposal at The Nelmes, Munsley near Ledbury.
Designed by specialist Herefordshire firm Border Oak, the two-storey house would be similar in size to the existing Dutch barn, but would instead be oriented away from the other buildings at The Nelmes, which include a listed granary.

Permission was given earlier this year to convert the barn into housing of “a simple utilitarian design” under so-called permitted development rights, Mr Whittal’s application explains.
This fallback position “is an important consideration” in deciding whether it ought to be replaced instead, it says.

A new yet traditional house, of brick and weatherboarding with clay tiles, would better complement the existing buildings and “reflect the local vernacular”, it adds.
For open-market sale, the house would have a double car port with cycle storage, and would have “attractive” landscaping around it. Sewage would be treated by an on-site package plant.
