TATTOOING is big business and Scarlett Ink is tapping into the trend in Ledbury.

We spoke to Melanie Reeves about her business.

What is your full name?

Melanie Reeves

What is the name and address of your business?

Scarlett Ink

9 New Street, Ledbury

Do you own the business?

No, George Averill owns the business, it’s a barber and tattoo studio, the first ever one in Herefordshire. This has worked out better than we could have imagined. However, I asked to name the tattoo side after my daughter Scarlett as she inspired me to open working with George.

What do you sell / service provide?

Tattoos and haircuts within the establishment

What is the most popular service you provide?

I can’t say there is one popular service within tattooing side as I work with my clients to create their own unique design to get them the best possible outcome for their design.

I would like to add, that I have a loyal Ledbury customer base but I also have customers who travel from all over the country, I think this is amazing as they also get to experience Ledbury in all its beauty and support other local businesses.

How did you get into the business?

Well, there are so many layers to this; I’m thinking of the best way to explain. I’ve always had a passion for drawing, designing, and doing it as a hobby. But when I was 17, I joined the Royal Air Force and put everything onto the back burner. Don’t get me wrong; while I was on the plane or away, I’d sit drawing and dreaming of a life where this could be my job.

Fast forward a few years, I got pregnant with my daughter Scarlett, and she is diagnosed with ASD. My job role in the RAF was very difficult to make sure she came first, so I decided to find a job that puts her first, and all I have ever dreamed about was being a tattoo artist and decided to get a mentor and see if it was actually possible. When I say I fell in love with my machine, the ink, the tattoo process everything from day one is putting it lightly. I spent every minute of my spare time learning while still serving and then took the jump in 2022 and opened my studio. The reason it’s called Scarlett Ink is that everything I do is for her, and every milestone she has achieved has inspired me. She may only be 8 years old, but she is my inspiration.

What is the strangest thing you have been asked for at Scarlett Ink?

Nothing is strange; everyone has their own ideas and likes. I will never judge someone for having an idea; after all, if that’s what they like, then that’s it.

Has the business changed over the last few years?

It most definitely has. I originally started out on my own two years ago, but around 9 months ago, I now have another artist within the studio, Connor Bufton. Additionally, I also have Chris who manages all the admin and social media aspects at Scarlett Ink.

Anything else you would like to add?

I would like the chance to say thank you to everyone who has come into the studio. You’ve all been so lovely, and I couldn’t have been welcomed to Ledbury in a nicer way! You’ve made my dream become a reality. So thank you again.
