A BID to convert a former Victorian school boarding house into apartments has been submitted to planners.

The application to transform The Mount, on Albert Road North, in Great Malvern, has gone in to Malvern Hill District Council.

The proposal, from Worcester-based developer Guthrie Roberts Ltd, is to create 11 apartments - six one-bedroom and five two-bedroom.

It states that the building has been empty for a "short period of time, having been placed on the market in September 2023."

Notes to planners state: "The Mount was originally built in circa 1853 and is of imposing Victorian construction, in white coloured stucco render and featuring sash and bay windows."

They go on to say a "poor quality" addition with corrugated metal sheet walls and roof which is home to a games room would be demolished as would "existing unsightly fire escapes."

It also states that "no trees of significant amenity value would be removed."

The property has four floors, including a basement and attic and when it was boarding accommodation had 17 bedrooms, nine bathrooms, two kitchens, two sitting rooms, laundry and storage space.

There is an internally accessed self-contained one-bed apartment on the ground floor.

Plans include creating 11 parking spaces - at the moment there are four.

The application states that "in terms of the likelihood of any increased parking demand, the off-street space required can be accommodated within an enlarged hardstanding to the side/front of The Mount.

"Some landscaping work would be required to accommodate this, including a new retaining wall, as well as associated widening of the entrance off Albert Road North."

The application states: "There are economic, social and environmental benefits associated with the proposed development which are not outweighed by any adverse impacts.

"The proposal represents an organic form of development that is appropriate to its built and natural setting and would contribute to the Council’s housing land supply."

The Mount is in the Great Malvern Conservation Area; specifically, the ‘Victorian Malvern’ character area.

The consultation ends on April 20.
