Rubbish which blocked a stream and caused flooding on a nearby road has now been cleared away.

Swindon Borough Council explained on Saturday that construction and garden waste in the culvert that carries the stream under Perry’s Lane in Wroughton has been removed.

The blockage led to a build-up of water that flooded the road earlier this month.

Tree roots may also need to be removed from the culvert, which is 29 metres in length and is close to several private culverts in the gardens of nearby residential properties both upstream and downstream.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “As the upstream culvert is narrower and faster flowing than the road culvert, it creates turbulent conditions which makes it much more difficult to clear away accumulated debris, especially during very high seasonal rainfall.

“Installing a sloping screen to lift debris out of the stream is challenging owing to the limited space between the culverts and a 90 degree bend in the waterway.

“However, we will be investigating whether such a solution is feasible to mitigate the future risk of flooding.

“We have written to local residents directly affected by the flooding to confirm we will be investigating the cost and feasibility of different options to prevent the culvert being blocked, taking into account the advice of the Environment Agency.”
