DRIVERS planning to use a busy main road around Hereford have been told to plan ahead for their journeys, with a series of road closures on the way.

National Highways is advising drivers using the A49 around Hereford to allow for extra time to travel due to “planned maintenance”.

The agency have said that road closures and traffic management will be needed between Greyfriars Bridge and Walnut Tree Avenue in the city to allow for vegetation clearance, drainage repairs, and road resurfacing to provide a “smoother and safer carriageway for drivers”.

The work will be carried out overnight when traffic flows are low to keep disruption to drivers to a minimum. Fully signed diversion routes will also be in place during the closures.

From Monday, September 9 to Saturday, September 14, temporary traffic lights will be between Ross Road/the Asda roundabout and run to the Ross Road/Walnut Tree Avenue area.

From Monday, 16 September to Friday, 20 September, from 8pm to 6am there will be a full closure, in both directions, between Ross Road/Asda Roundabout to Ross Road/Walnut Tree Avenue.

From Monday, 23 September to Wednesday, 23 October, 8pm to 6am on week nights, there will be temporary traffic lights between Ross Road/Asda Roundabout to Ross Road/Walnut Tree Avenue.

National Highways have also warned drivers that during October, there will be two additional full overnight closures, however the dates are yet to be confirmed.  

Access to properties and for emergency service vehicles will be maintained via escort vehicle.
