FOR NEW parents out there, probably the hardest part of welcoming a new life into the family is what to name the baby?

It can be hard to choose or maybe you have a name in mind, but how curious are you to find out which names are the most common in Herefordshire?

New data from the Office For National Statistics (ONS) has revealed which names were the most sought after for new-borns in 2024.

In England and Wales, the top three most popular girls' names (first to third) were Olivia, Amelia and Lily, while leading the boys' rankings was Muhammad, Noah and Oliver.

A full list of the most popular names in Herefordshire can be seen below:

  • The most popular girls names are Olivia and Amelia where there was a count of 19 new births with this name

  • The most popular boys name was Oliver where there was a count of 34 new births with this name

The ONS have also provided historical data nationally stretching back to 1904.

For a girl's name in Herefordshire there does not appear to be much change as ten years ago in 2014, across the country Amelia and Olivia were popular girls names.

Going back to 1984, Sarah, Claire and Gemma were popular girls names, whereas in 1904 the names Mary, Florence and Doris were the top three names.

For a boy's name, ten years ago in 2014, Oliver was still the most popular name followed by Jack and Harry.

Going back to 1984, Christopher, James and David were three popular names, and in 1964 David, Paul and Andrew were popular.

In 1904 the most popular boys names were William, John, George and Thomas.
