An athletics stalwart who dedicated more than 60 years to the sport has died.

Tony Williams was described as “one of the most influential and dedicated figures” in the history of Hereford and County Athletics Club, the Herefordshire Athletics Association, and county athletics as a whole.

Having started running in 1945, Mr Williams was a talented middle-distance runner who went on to serve the sport in nearly every capacity.

A spokesman for Hereford and County Athletics Club said: "We are profoundly grateful for everything he gave to our sport, our athletes and our community.

"His legacy will continue to inspire us for many years to come."

Mr Williams began his athletics journey with Pontrilas AC before joining Hereford and County Athletics Club, where he became deeply involved in nurturing young talent.

He played a key role in founding the Herefordshire Cross Country League and remained an active supporter, regularly presenting awards well into his later years.

A qualified timekeeper and track judge, he dedicated countless hours to officiating and supporting competitions across the county.

Among his greatest achievements was the creation of Hereford's first athletics track.

One of his greatest legacies is the existence of the athletics track in Hereford, according to the athletics club.

In 1964, alongside a small group of volunteers, he spent years digging run ups, throwing areas and pits by hand, creating the county’s first athletics track and enabling the first County Championships in 1975

In 1988, he led efforts to develop the modern track that remains in use today.

During a recent campaign to save the facility, many reflected that without Mr Williams' early drive and determination, there may never have been a track to protect, the club spokesperson said.

In 2023, Mr Williams was honoured for his extraordinary service at the England Athletics Volunteer Awards, recognising his lifelong dedication and the lasting impact he made on the sport in Herefordshire.

Hereford and County Athletics Club said his lifelong passion for athletics and commitment to supporting young athletes shaped the sport in Herefordshire for generations.

He continued to attend club events and competitions until recently, demonstrating his unwavering commitment.

A spokesperson for Hereford and County Athletics Club said: "We extend our deepest condolences to Tony’s family and friends."
