A family tribute to a dedicated Special Air Service (SAS) veteran has said how he will be greatly missed.

Tony La Frenais, who fought during the Falklands War, died peacefully at home in Wellington, near Hereford, aged 81.

A tribute from the Dublin Central Branch of the Royal British Legion said he began his military career in the Parachute Regiment before joining G Squadron, 22 SAS.

Based at Stirling Lines in Credenhill, it is one of the regiment's four operational sabre squadrons.

Formed in the mid-1960s from the Guards Parachute Company, G Squadron has played key roles in some of Britain's most notable special forces operations, including the Falklands War and the campaign in Afghanistan.

During his service, Mr La Frenais was recognised for his exemplary service and bravery, the tribute said.

"Tony dedicated his life to serving his country," the tribute said, adding: "He earned the respect of those who served alongside him."

A death notice published in the Hereford Times said: "Loving Husband of Bridget and a loving Father of Chris, Anne and Phil, also a cherished Grandad.

"He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends."

His funeral service will take place at Hereford Crematorium on Tuesday, July 28, at 11.15am, with family flowers only.

Donations, if desired, can be given in aid of the Macmillan Renton Unit for cancer patients at Hereford County Hospital.

The Royal British Legion statement described Mr La Frenais as a man of "courage, loyalty, humility, and unwavering dedication," and said he would be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather after his "long and courageous battle with cancer".

"Tony La Frenais' legacy lives on through his family, his friends, and all those whose lives he touched," the Royal British Legion tribute added.

"His service to his country and his commitment to those he loved will be remembered with deep gratitude and lasting respect."
