STUDENTS and staff at Ashperton Primary are celebrating after becoming the first school in Herefordshire to win a prestigious award for its environmentally friendly activities.
The school has been recognised for its work in tree planting, reducing carbon emissions and recycling with a gold award from the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools award scheme.
Over the past two years pupils at Ashperton have planted new trees in their school grounds and grown trees from seeds, as well as recycling Christmas cards and visiting woodlands.
Year Two teacher and Eco School co-ordinator Sue Fowler is thrilled at being the first school in the county and one of the first in the country to win a gold award.
“We are very passionate about the environment at Ashperton Primary School and it is wonderful for the Woodland Trust to recognise our commitment and enthusiasm,” she said.
Karen Letton, schools development officer with the Woodland Trust, said schools are able to take a ‘pick and mix’ approach to conservation.
“Teachers and children choose from a range of activities to suit their interest and priorities at any given moment,” she said.
