STUDENTS at the John Masefield High School have been seeking the competitive edge this week, when it comes to maths excellence.
They have been practising their skills in advance of a competition showdown, next week.
In fact, the Year 7 students have been competing in heats over several weeks, to achieve a place in the final of the school's much anticipated Year 7 Maths Competition, an annual event.
A school spokesman said: "This is a fun competition but is highly contested and the winners have to demonstrate excellent maths skills, be quick on the buzzer and use lateral thinking skills to solve maths puzzles.
"Sixteen students, watched by their parents and staff, will take part in the final which will be held on Monday December 5."
Up for grabs will be house points and prizes.
