LEDBURY Lions clinched the top spot in the Gloucester & District One league after an impressive season.
The Lions, bolstered by a strengthened squad of senior players, entered the 2024/25 season with a renewed focus.
Facing old rivals, including Old Patesians, Cheltenham Tigers, and Minchinhampton, the team quickly found their rhythm.
Having played 16 games with only one loss and an unbeaten run of 10 matches, the Lions have shown their prowess on the field.
The team, consisting of a mix of Colts, seniors, and new and returning players, have become a formidable side.
Their home ground, Ross Road, has been dubbed the biggest fortress, with the highest points scored at home and the least points conceded.
The Lions' success can be attributed to the dedication of the players and the leadership of captain Khayd Saxelby.
The team has also benefited from the coaching of Andy Issacs, a new member of the coaching squad.
Some standout players this season have included Rob Anscombe, Jonny Strickland, John Parker, Harry Evans, Tom Hill, and Alfie Scholefield.
The Lions' journey through the season has taken them to various locations, from the top of the Cotswolds to the Forest of Dean and metropolitan Cheltenham Town.
The weather has also been a factor, with a memorable game played in the teeth of Storm Daragh at Minchinhampton.
However, the Lions have consistently shown their best rugby regardless.
The home game against Minchinhampton, which secured the Lions the title, was a highlight of the season, followed by well-deserved celebrations in the 'Led Shed'.
The Lions' manager, Simon 'Stumpy' Luckett, said: "It has been a pleasure to be part of this amazing club, and the backbone is undoubtably the players, so onwards and upwards and into the next season with our heads held high and hope in our hearts.
"Lions, keep doing what you do, and the rewards will come.
"Finally mention must go to ‘Fat’ Matt Pugh, Gareth Bubb and Chris Wallin for their unwavering support throughout the season.
"Thanks guys."
