MAYOR of Worcester, Councillor Jabba Riaz learned a handy new skill at a community group which is helping to end throw away culture.

Under the capable supervision of machinist Jenny Wilkinson who gave the mayor a brief lesson on how to use a sewing machine, he mended the broken strap of a rucksack belonging to a school boy.

Mrs Wilkinson from St John’s, Worcester said: “The boy will be able to use it again and it will last a bit longer which is what we are about. The item can carry on its life and still be useful.”

Mrs Wilkinson who’s mum taught her to sew said: “I can embroider, I can make clothes and I’m good at fixing things, my grandchildren always say ‘granny will fix it.’”

Rod Howell is chair of Worcester Repair Cafe which meets at Unity House, Stanley Road every second Saturday of the month from 11.00 am – 2.00 pm. Mr Howell said: “Anything that is broken that you can fit through the door we will have a go at fixing. We have got our sewing team, we do electrical repairs, we will do any small items of furniture and then there’s the mechanical engineers who do things with motors. We have got a remote control car working today.”

Anyone looking to learn or brush up on skills or is building up their CV is encouraged to come along as Mr Howell will happily write a reference. Repair Cafe is still looking for ‘handy men and women’ with the ability to fix things. Contact repaircafeworcester.gmail.com or 07852310912.
