A “tatty” storage container used by a city football club is set to be kept in place despite complaints – but only if it is painted green.

The blue storage container owned by Perdiswell Colts Football Club already sits on the south west corner of Bilford Road and Droitwich Road where the team plays.

However, the location of the container has prompted some complaints from residents in Bilford Road as well as a local councillor who said it should be moved.

Mr Godwin of Bilford Road, said: “We were terribly disappointed when the unsightly, tatty, monstrous container was placed in the playing field directly opposite our house, without prior consultation or notification.

“We were so pleased during the summer months when the hedgerow grew high enough to shield us from the ugliness of the container, unfortunately, the hedgerow has now been cut and is exposing more than half the height of the container.”

Mr Godwin suggested placing the unit near the Nuffield Health Centre where it would also be more secure due to better lighting and would not encroach on the views of residents in Bilford Road.

Owen Westby of Bilford Road, in his objection to the council, said residents should have been asked before the unit was put in place.

Cllr Gareth Jones objected to the plan and said the container was “unsightly” and said it should be moved to somewhere else on the field.

However, Mike Stephenson, design out crime officer for West Mercia Police, said he would prefer for the container to stay in its current location.

He believes moving it any further away from the natural surveillance of the busy Bilford Road would put the container’s contents at risk of theft.

If approved, the container will be painted dark green to camouflage it.

The city council’s planning committee meets on Thursday (January 24) to make a decision.
