It is good news for everyone - drivers and pedestrians alike - that the unpopular zebra crossing overt Pheasant Street will be replaced by traffic lights.
No-one seems to have had a good word to say about the existing crossing, much like the one in Croft Road, by the racecourse, which is already in the process of replacement.
One can understand drivers getting annoyed at a jerky stop-start stop-start process necessitated by negotiating a string of traffic lights as they make their way across town.
But it's surely better than the longer delays which they must sometimes have encountered at the uncontrolled crossings, when the pedestrians come along at just the wrong intervals to cause lengthy hold-ups.
At least with light-controlled crossings, the highway authority can adjust the timing of the sequence to achieve the best compromise between the needs of vehicles and the needs of foot traffic.
And achieving such compromises is a necessary part of making our city as good as it can be - for everyone who uses it. After all, we all matter.
