BANGKOK’S red light district is set to have a Cotswold-style makeover to deter sex tourists.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha is understood to be wanting to remodel the centre of the Thai capital in the image of Bourton-on-the-Water, all in a bid to stop the area having the reputation as an area for prostitutes, which has been build up over decades.

The plan is reportedly likely to involve replacing the brothels with property typical of the village, and painting buildings a soft shade of yellow.

Canals have already been dredged and floating water cleaners installed, with plans to plant yellow star flowers along the banks to make the waterways more attractive.

Bourton-on-the-Water is regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England, and a delegation from the Royal Thai Embassy of Thailand’s Government’s is understood to have visited the area a year ago.

The trip is likely to have involved an inspection of the village known for its picturesque High Street, flanked by long wide greens and the River Windrush that runs through them.

The Bangkok Post has said the Prime Minister has already started to work on making Rattanakosin Island more like the bits of Gloucestershire he admires.

Street food sellers and scrap metal workers could also be moved on from the area, according to the reports.

The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has a population of 3,296 inhabitants, compared to the 8.2 million that live in Bangkok. Bourton attracts more than 300,000 visitors a year, compared to the 20.5 million visitors to the Thai capital.
