A TEENAGED girl remains in a critical condition after the motorcycle she was a passenger on crashed at a road traffic island.

The 18-year-old was a pillion passenger on a motorbike which was involved in a smash at the junction of Chawn Hill and Ham Lane on Sunday July 14 at around 10pm.

She was initially taken to Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley and later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and was reported to be fighting for her life.

The motorcycle rider, a 21-year-old man, was also hurt in the crash and was also taken to the QE Hospital.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said:"The rider - a man in his 20s - was treated for multiple serious injuries and was taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

"A consultant paramedic travelled with him in the ambulance.

"The pillion passenger - a teenaged woman - was initially treated for multiple injuries and was taken to Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley but was subsequently transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police added: "The man suffered non-life threatening injuries and the woman remains in a critical condition."

The force is now appealing for dash cam footage from motorists who may have been in the area at the time of the crash, which paramedics were alerted to at 10.06pm, and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as West Mercia Police officers were in the area at time - having been called to a nearby incident.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said its officers had earlier, at around 9.50pm, responded to reports of cars speeding on the A456 at Hagley and added: "On arrival a number of vehicles left the scene. A short time later one of these vehicles, a motorcycle, was involved in a collision on the traffic island at the junction of Chawn Hill and Ham Lane (A4036) where both the rider and passenger were seriously injured.

"The collision took place on the West Midlands Police force area and is being investigated by West Midlands officers. The West Mercia Police car was not involved in the collision with the motorcycle and was not pursuing it.

"The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."
