WORCESTER'S MP has reiterated there continues to be a "misunderstanding" over the government's decision to suspend parliament.

On Saturday around 200 people turned up to a 'Stop the Coup' demonstration in Worcester High Street.

Demonstrations were also held in cities across the UK protesting Prime Minister Boris Johnson's move to prorogue parliament, which will lead to fewer days for opposition MPs to block a no deal Brexit.

Robin Walker, who is also a minister in the government, said: "I saw some of the protests - people on them are misunderstanding what is happening.

"They are being told parliament is closed down, but in reality there will be time to debate Brexit."

Readers also had their say on Worcester News' social media to the protest.

Louise Morrell said: "Really don’t see the point in these protests. It’s not gonna change anything. Doesn’t matter how many protests there are, how many people, we have no influence on what’s going to happen."

Dave Benfield said: "They think that they are defending democracy by trying to prevent it? In a democracy - the larger number of votes wins the outcome."

Terry Mark said: "These are people who want democracy killed off," but Norman Negg replied: "As opposed to those who are happy with parliament being shut down, or MPs being sacked for voting against something they don't agree with.

"True defenders of democracy, right?"

Colin Rees said: "If we don't actually leave, on any terms, I will never vote again as three years on our democratic vote has still not been honoured.

"Democracy means getting what we voted for three years ago."

A reader on the Worcester News website said: "If economists are correct in their forecast no deal will be disastrous. I hope we achieve a deal. What a divided kingdom we are."

Will Son added: "498 MP'S voted to trigger Article 50. This clearly states we leave with or without a deal after two years. This may have been extended but Article 50 is still very clear."
