AFTER just finishing my first year at Worcester News it’s inspired me to look back on my experience working for a local paper.

I started working here just after finishing university. I was fortunate to get a job straight away, because as you can imagine, it’s a difficult industry to break into.

Starting as a trainee reporter with minimal experience, I do still find it exciting to see my byline in the paper and my story printed.

What I love about this job is that no two days are the same. You’re constantly on the go and you meet so many different people. Throughout interviews, I’ve met the most inspiring individuals as they’ve shared their stories with me. It’s been a real eye-opener.

There’s also been a few incidents which have made me chuckle, such as reading the comments on some stories.

To only name a few, I’ve been told that my hairstyle looks like I’ve got a squirrel on my head, and that when I wear my glasses they do me no favours. I didn't realise I was such a fashion idol.

However, I’ve also been compared to as Angelina Jolie and Princess Stephanie of Monaco – I definitely don’t see the similarities.

As part of my role, I’m learning shorthand, which is obviously a valuable tool. But I tell you what, it’s like learning another language. I find it amusing when I’m interviewing someone and they question this ‘code’ that I have written on paper.

In terms of achievements, I’d have to say Strictly Worcestershire has been the biggest. The vice chair of Worcestershire Ambassadors - Julia Williams - who organised the event, approached me and asked if I’d be interested in signing up for the charity ballroom competition.

Of course, me loving a challenge, I accepted. After months of training and plenty of reporting in the paper, the event ended up being one of the best nights of my life. I’ll forever be grateful for that opportunity.

Another little task I’ve been faced with at work is Veganuary. Me, an avid meat eater, was asked to become vegan during January and complete a diary on how I got on – not so well may I add.

However, this experience taught me willpower and dedication. It even inspired me to now choose healthier food options.
