THE charity supporting this year’s Worcester City Run is gearing up for the big day, with more than 60 runners taking part to raise money for research into childhood cancers.

The team of 62 runners from the Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust will be taking part in the 10k and half marathon runs on Sunday, September 15 to raise money for research into cancer and support for local families.

The team is made up of lots of runners and walkers, including Colin Burgin-Plews, also known as ‘Big Pink Dress’ who is taking part in a large homemade outfit.

The team is led by Jennifer Kelly, who set up the charity after her four year-old daughter Grace died in 2014.

She said: “The team will be out in force on Sunday, and we are so pleased to have 62 runners and walkers out on the course.

“These runners include, the big Pink Dress himself, a dragon and also many ladybirds as well.

“Our team includes Grace’s Grandad Chris Britt-Compton and three local oncology families as well.

“It really is amazing to see so many turned out on the streets of Grace’s home town to help us support local children."

The GKCCT was set up in memory of Grace and works to provide support to local families, fund research and teach the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer so parents know what to look out for.

The mother-of-one of the children who has been helped through the charity’s work will be out on the course on Sunday.

The Worcester City Run is expected to feature more than 5,000 runners in a winding course which stretches round the city.

The run’s route begins in Castle Street before looping round Foregate Street, Friar Street, Deansway, past Worcester Cathedral, along the river to Diglis, back along the other side of the river past Chapter Meadows and Blackfinch New Road, down Hylton Road and past the University campus, before looping round and coming back up Hylton Road and back to the finish line, opposite where the run started.

As a result, several roads are being closed in the city to allow the runners to compete safely.
