President Margaret Potter opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and also our speaker for the evening Rob Hemming As it is our 70th Anniversary this year it was suggested that a small quilt, tablecloth or banner be made from individual squares sewn by our members. A sub committee has been formed to organise the marking and celebrating two events in August and October. Slips of paper were given to each member with three suggestions for ideas for the August event and members were asked to tick the type of evening they would most enjoy. It was suggested we might like to make little green hearts to ‘show the love’ for our country and our commitment to helping with climate change. Janice made a beautiful patchwork heart which will go to WI House along with messages attached by members saying how they are doing there bit in this campaign. The Green Hearts project was mentioned to the Littletons Primary School and we look forward to hearing their ideas to help the carbon footprint in our community. Margaret Potter has put a board together with a list of the competitions and their criteria for this years ACM at Three Counties Showground Our speaker Rob Hemming gave a very interesting talk on the History of the Regal Cinema. It first opened in 1932 when a local business man realised how much it would benefit the community. Unfortunately it closed in 2003 but a concert promoter and entrepreneur, Patrick Wiper, could see the need for a cinema as it was at this time the only one in the town. He and other investors provided the funds and it opened again in 2011. It has shown many classical and popular films over the years as well as Live shows and screened Live Broadcasts from London and other cities. After a delicious supper the competition ‘An item of film memorabilia’ was judged by Rob and the winner was Margaret D with a 1959 film script for ‘The French Mistress’ The meeting closed at 9.40pm. The next meeting is on Tuesday 10th March, 2020 at 7.00pm
