A WOMAN who watched her grandmother die from cancer is half way through a series of six gruelling challenges to help raise money for a cancer charity.

Liza Nicol has already completed two challenges and was due to walk the Jurrasic Coast last weekend but was unable to because of coronavirus.

Miss Nicol, 38 instead chose to complete the 100km walk around her house. It took her a breathtaking 29 hours to complete.

She said: “I feel amazed I did it and also very proud that I am able to show my charity that I am doing my best to continue to support them!

“I walked 100km in my garden without stopping, apart from rest breaks, it took 29 hours and ten minutes.

“Obviously it didn't have the hills of the Jurassic Coast, but it was hard not having the constant chats and support from fellow walkers.

“The constant turning every few steps puts a lot of strain on your ankles and lower legs, so I think this makes it a bit tougher too.

“When I got to 95km I thought “I can't go on,” so I popped a message on our facebook ultra challenge group and was overwhelmed by the amount of supportive messages I got at about 3am. They pushed me through to the end. I’m now just £20 short of my minimum target!

Miss Nicol has raised £1,580 for Cancer Research in memory of her beloved grandmother, Philomena Bernie, who died just four weeks after her diagnosis.

Miss Nicol said: “Losing her was devastating. She was in a care home and had dementia at the time, she didn’t understand what was happening a lot of the time.

“One day she had a bad fall and ended up in hospital. She got worse and worse and then one day a Macmillan nurse came in to tell my mother and I she had cancer. It was all over her body, in her lungs and kidneys and stomach.

“Me and my mum were there when she passed away, it was very, very hard to watch, but I am glad I was there with her until the end.”
