Last week the Prime Minister confirmed that we had passed the peak of Covid-19 and I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to you all for the massive collective effort to shield the NHS and prevent an uncontrollable epidemic across Dudley Borough. The people of this constituency always answer the call.

I have been humbled by the amount of people in Stourbridge who have helped others during this unprecedented time with their acts of selflessness.  I therefore launched my "Unsung Heroes" campaign to recognise those acts of generosity. If you know of someone who deserves recognition, you can email me their name to the contact details below or share their story on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the #StourbridgeUnsungHeroes.

Westminster is now a virtual Parliament. The House of Commons Services have done an incredible job – a feat of engineering – overturning over 700 years of history to ensure MPs can still scrutinise and hold the Government to account by looking down the lens of a camera. However, having a virtual Parliament is not a long-term solution and I look forward to the time when things get back to normal.

The economic recovery of Stourbridge is currently at the forefront of my work as your Member of Parliament.  Which is why I spoke during last week’s Finance Bill debate on the need for action that will bring real benefits to not just businesses, but people and communities as we plan our exit from the lockdown. I have held discussions with Job Centre Plus, the Chamber of Commerce and local businesses. Covid-19 has caused damage to the livelihoods of many hard-working people across the constituency. It is important that we all work together to protect our local economy and people's jobs.

Friday marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe. Despite the need for social distancing you can still get involved from the safety of your own homes.  You can join your neighbours on your doorsteps or in your window, to mark the moment of remembrance at 11am on Friday 8th May. You can also take part in the national singalong of Dame Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ at 9pm, or maybe get your kids to take part in creative activities, including making bunting and posters to display in your front window in a ‘Stay at Home Street Party’.

You always answer the call and it would be fitting if Stourbridge said a huge ‘Thank You’ to the Second World War generation and paid tribute to the ‘Greatest Generation’. I look forward to hearing all your stories of the day and seeing all your photos of #VEDay75.

Finally, despite passing the peak, until we have the infection rate down, we still need to follow social distancing rules. We always knew that this would not be a short battle – beating Covid-19 will take months, not weeks. So please, continue your fantastic collective effort by staying home, protecting the NHS and continuing to save lives.

As ever, my team and I are available to help with any issues that you may have. You can call us on 01384 370 574, or email me at suzanne.webb.mp@parliament.uk.
