Who is your coronavirus lockdown hero?

Do you know someone who has stepped up to help their community during the coronavirus lockdown? If so, we want to salute them in the Worcester News.

Tell us their name, how they have helped their community and send us a photo of them, and we will feature them in our We Salute You roll call in our special edition of the Worcester News on Saturday, May 30 – Worcestershire: Life in Lockdown.

Use the contribute button below to tell us who you want to nominate.

Two of the people nominated will each win six bottles of wine, courtesy of Bottles in New Street, Worcester.

Anyone can be a lockdown hero: people who have delivered food and shopping to isolating neighbours; keyworkers risking their own health to help others; teachers who have cared for the children of keyworkers – we want to salute everyone in Worcestershire who has helped their community during this difficult time.

Among those lockdown heroes we have already featured in the Worcester News are Toby Stringer and his partner Lyndsey Cox, who created Plate One Up And Pass It On – a page to supply meals to the vulnerable and single parents who have struggled to get food during the pandemic.

Mr Stringer, from Norton, said: “As a group we have achieved so much. What started out as a simple concept of plate one up and pass it on soon grew way beyond that. We currently have over 45 active pairings, these involve a volunteer shopping, collecting prescriptions, popping a cooked meal around or providing a good old chit chat.

“We have distributed hundreds of treats packages all across Worcestershire, covering NHS, care homes, children’s homes, schools, doctors surgeries and so many more.

“These amazing volunteers go above and beyond with what they do proving social care to elderly and vulnerable in their free time.”

The group was formed on March 17 and since then members have bought a nurse a car after hers was damaged from having her catalytic converters stolen while she was working at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

What is your response?I would like to thank all the staff who dealt with me at Worcester Royal last Sunday when I came to A&E last Saturday to be checked out for a possible second stroke. I was checked in, underwent scans and a mild stroke was detected and treated Enabling me to return home after 2 nights. I was also tested for Corona virus on entry and am virus free. During my stay, a major emergency came in and I saw amazing teamwork to stabilise a patient with a massive bleed on the brain. They are all my heroes.

What is your response? My lockdown hero is Liz Falconer who is a Police Officer at Worcester. Liz continues to support and serve our community and keep us safe during these testing times. She is always positive and has a warm welcoming smile, thus is so important at a time when we all need reasurance.

What is your response?Vicky Onions runs a convenience store/post office in Lickey End, BROMSGROVE. Throughout lockdown she has worked extremely hard to help the community - helping people in isolation and offering free delivery. She has gone far and above in her help to the community - working many extra hours and sourcing things that customers could not get elsewhere. She is always cheerful and works around the clock (despite having two lovely children). She is a heroine - Lickey End thanks you!

What is your response? For me it's my friend Rachel Turner. Working within the NHS has been daunting and being cut off from family and friends the support can really lack. Rachel is a fellow HCA within the same team and is always at the other end of the phone. She makes me laugh every day and keeps my moral up so I can be the best I can be for our patients. She has had lots to deal with herself but will always put others first. With everything going on at work she still managed to do her food collections for the food bank. Amazing team support has been my godsend during lockdown ❤ She is definitely a hero but doesn't realise it

What is your response?Rev Dr David John Southall, chaplain of Worcester Royal Hospital. A man with a kind heart who will move mountains to see others smile. He’s visited patients; newly born and at their last dying breath and taken funerals for those who’ve lost loved ones; and still comes home at the end of the day with a gleaming smile to resume as a husband, father and grandfather.
