NEWENT Cricket Club won the Tewkesbury 20-over Knock-out Cup for the first time.

With a team averaging just 20 years old, they beat Gotherington in the final after restricting their opponents to 125.

Gotherington raced to 33-0 off three overs but the slow bowlers worked for Newent with Karl Mortimer (1-14) and Nathan Awford (1-22) instrumental.

Newent’s openers set a solid platform with 23 off three overs and skipper Tom Morley (36) moved them on to 93 before being caught.

With 32 runs needed off the last six overs, Alex Gray (19 not out) and Everton Graham (11no) guided them to the cup.

Newent beat Twyning in the semi-finals after deciding to bowl first.

Liam Devries (0-19) and Liam Malone (1-18) did well before spinners Mortimer (1-20) and Graham (1-8) carried on the good work.

Joe Gare bowled three overs for 18 and Jack Cowles took 2-20 to restrict Twyning to 116.

In reply, Cowles fell for 14 and Mortimer scored a hard-hitting 55 before James Lifely’s 27no led Newent home with four overs left.
