WORCESTER Nomads recorded their first win in six matches after an entertaining match with bottom-of-the-table Burghill, Tillington and Weobley.

A thrilling last-over finish was on the cards as both teams punched and counter-punched in Worcestershire League Division One.

The visitors had little hesitation in batting first on what looked to be a flat surface at Bransford.

Patrick O’Driscoll (2-38) soon made inroads with two wickets before Burghill reached 20.

However, opener Owen Morgan and Ben Parkinson put on a third-wicket century stand with the pitch offering little assistance once the early shine left the ball.

Nomads toiled in the heat but leg-spinner Josh Hawes intercepted a drive off his own bowling before his quick release and direct hit saw the demise of Morgan (59).

Parkinson (61) was trapped lbw by Cameron Blakey (2-51) before the same bowler struck again and then took a catch off Hawes' bowling.

Burgill were bowled out for 217 in the 48th over as Harvey Groves finished with 3-43 and Steve Emson claimed a wicket and a diving catch.

Nomads replied steadily with 37 for the opening stand but David White (12) followed a wide one and was caught.

However, Worcester used the sheer pace of bowler Toby Wildig (2-50) to their advantage.

Mark Groves (14) looked in good touch but was caught in the covers off a low full toss.

Guy Davies (27) was caught behind off spinner Oscar Darke (3-20) while skipper Ollie Ranscombe (15) and Lewis Austin (1) fell cheaply.

But Harvey Groves and Emson batted with control and patience for an 80-run stand.

The former reached his 50 with seven fours but was caught behind off Wildig.

Emson (30) slashed at a wide long hop as Nomads fell to 175-7 with seven overs left.

But Joe Laugher and Hawes took back the initiative with fine running between the wickets.

Laugher (16) was dismissed in the penultimate over with just four runs needed.

Hawes (23 not out) got stranded at the non-striker’s end for the last over but O’Driscoll ensured a two-wicket victory on 218-8 with four balls to spare.

Fifth-from-bottom Nomads visit Bewdley on Saturday (1pm).
