NIGEL Bayliss and Chris Loveridge shared first place in Malvern Anglers' Wye Cup.

After heavy rain and flooded conditions the previous week, the river level at Bishopwood had dropped enough to fish the match in memory of former Wye champion Ron Thomas who died recently.

But in bright sunny conditions with the river flowing fast and clear, anglers found it difficult at first to catch anything other than minnows.

However, Bayliss got small dace throughout the match by trotting a float with maggots through a steady swim to accumulate a weight of 6lb 7oz.

After trying for bigger fish for most of the match with ledger tactics Loveridge found that dace had started to feed in his swim.

He switched to float fishing with maggots to catch some dace that by the end of the match amounted to exactly the same weight as Bayliss to share first place.

Upstream of the two, not much else was caught except for a chub by John Shaw to gain him third place with 1-14 while Lee Harman managed 0-8.
