THE girls' under 13s have become the first female Welland Junior side to win a league championship.

Having formed in 2017-18, fielding only eight players in their opening two fixtures presented an uncertain future for the new team.

But persistence paid off and with the dedication, hard work, determination and commitment of coaches, players and parents their second season has seen quite a turnaround.

Welland have been crowned Mercian Fortis Junior League 9v9 Division Two champions with two games left in an unbeaten league campaign with just two points dropped to date.

They have sat top since an opening-day 8-2 victory over current second-placed side Kinver Colts.

Welland secured the title with a 7-4 win at Warndon Village Wildcats through goals from Saff Boswell (2), Brooke Taylor (2), Lois Unwin (2) and Isla Thoburn.

Lead coach Mark Taylor said: “It’s been a tremendous journey so far and the level of development within the squad has been truly amazing.

"The girls deserve full credit for their attitude towards the game and a willingness to come, learn and enjoy their football week in week out.”

The team is backed by John Goodwin, Ensign Communications Ltd.

They play their final home game of season on Saturday against Redditch United at Dyson Perrins Academy (11.40am).
