WORCESTER City has confirmed West Bromwich Albion keeper Ted Cann will stay on for three more matches.

The 18-year-old Baggies rookie has sparkled in City’s opening three games against Newark Flowserve, South Normanton Athletic and Sunday’s 4-1 FA Cup success against Stone Old Alleynians.

Cann was drafted in as cover for Dan Jezeph's three-match suspension at the start of the season but the contracted custodian is now suffering with a hamstring injury.

It means Cann will be available for Saturday's home clash with Boldmere St Michaels, the trip to Long Eaton United in the Midland Football League Premier Division next Tuesday, an FA Cup tie at Heather St John's on Saturday, August 24 and another league game at home to Stourport Swifts on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26.

The current arrangement runs until August 27 but as a scholar on work experience it can be revisited at any time without the need for a formal loan.

However, City will need Jezeph to recover or find an alternative with Cann ineligible to feature in the FA Vase which kicks off with a trip to Hereford-based Wellington on Saturday, August 31.

“He is 18 years old but a giant of a man who is a very good goalkeeper with a very bright future ahead of him," said manager Ashley Vincent.

“We have enjoyed every minute of having him around, he is a top person ahead of everything else but has some serious ability on top of that.

“In his three games he has shown everyone his class and not just on the pitch.

“There is no air about him, none of this ‘I am from a Championship club, what am I doing here?’

“He has joined in, bonded with the boys and shown everyone what a proper keeper he is and I am delighted for him.

“That will be the report going back to West Brom, I know they watched him on Wednesday night (against South Normanton) and I will only have good things to say about him. He has been top drawer.

“Dan has only had good things to say about him as well having gone out and worked with him in training.

“I think the biggest thing people have realised is what a good person Ted is to have around and that kind of grounded attitude will stand him in good stead as he looks to make his way in the professional game.”
