DROITWICH Spa’s great escape from relegation could be on after a nine-wicket thrashing of fourth-placed Coombs Wood.

With five games left, Spa’s third win of the summer moved them off the foot of Worcestershire League Division One and now sit 12 points above bottom club Bredon and just 10 behind Worcester Nomads.

Spinner Martyn Davies (3-34) also picked up three wickets in four balls and skipper Max Young claimed the final two scalps as the visitors were dismissed for just 103.

Davies and Young then impressed with the bat as they put on 93 classy runs for the first wicket. Making a welcome return to form, Davies was the main aggressor, striking three sixes in a fluent 65. Young played sensibly to end on 25 not out as Spa won at a canter with 24 overs to spare.

Nomads sit precariously above the drop zone after a home defeat to Burghill, Tillington and Weobley.

An unbeaten 96 from Hamish Cooke and a half century from Sam Johnston (65) helped the visitors finished on 221-4 from their 35 overs.

Ben Schiffmann took 2-7 and swept his way to 52 courtesy of 10 fours but his efforts were in vain as Alex Hedges (4-38) and Sam Williams (3-17) did the damage for Burghill.

With leaders Colwall’s match against Cookley abandoned second-placed Bromyard reduced the gap at the top to 18 points after a nine-wicket win over Pedmore with Gregory Leightons taking 5-14.

Evesham’s survival hopes in Premier Division hang by a thread following a heavy eight-wicket loss to basement club Feckenham.

Waqas Ahmed hit a century and Waqur Ahmed picked up five wickets as Chaddesley Corbett put Worcester to the sword with a 132-run win.

Mid-table Pershore claimed a losing draw at table-toppers Stourbridge.

Ombersley seconds just managed to creep over the line by one wicket in a rain reduced-match against Kidderminster to stay at the Division Two summit.

Four matches were abandoned due to the weather in Division Three including the clash between the top two Old Vigornians and Netherton.

OVs slipped to fourth with Old Hill moving into second despite defeat and Barnards Green seconds climbing to third after beating Kempsey by seven wickets.

Second-placed Worcester seconds’ Division Four clash with Coombs Wood was called off, allowing Alvechurch and Hopwood to close the gap with a win over Bromsgrove thirds.

In Division Five, there were defeats for Worcester Nomads seconds, Droitwich seconds and West Malvern.

But Hanley Castle and Upton claimed an impressive 39-run victory over title-contenders Lye seconds thanks to 121 not out from Tristan Robinson and a fine bowling display from Tony Hutchings (5-24).
