MALVERN Town kick-started their pre-season campaign with a thumping 5-0 win over Gala Wilton.

Two goals from Matt Turner plus one each for Joe Bates, Lewis Platt and Matt Fusco gave us the win in hot conditions on August 8.

Co-manager Dene Whittal-Williams said: "The lads worked really hard in the heat.

"Our opponents caused us a few problems, particularly in the opening 10/15 minutes where they closed down hard and created a few chances.

"It took us time to get a foothold, but once we did our quality and fitness levels shone through.

"There were some fantastic performances out there; massive credit to our visitors because they kept at it and made it competitive, which you want in pre-season.

"We want to be confident in what we do. There’s still work to be done but we’re on the right track."

Whittal-Williams paid tribute to new signing Joe Bates, who scored in the win.

The striker, who has previously served the likes of Worcester City and Bishops Cleeve, adds to Town's attacking options for the campaign ahead.

He said: "He’ll bring plenty of attacking threat and energy to the group.

"He has really brought in to what we are trying to achieve here and his experience at Step 5 combined with his finishing ability will be a big help for us.

"He’s a player that we have been interested in for a while and now the time is right for him to come in.

"We are pleased that he has chosen to join us."

Bates added: "I’m delighted to be joining the club. Everyone has made me welcome and part of the team.

"It’s an exciting time for the club and I am keen to play my part in achieving our objectives.

"Things are moving in the right direction here and we’ve got a good bunch of lads who will always give 100% in training and on the pitch.

"The chairman, board of directors, management and staff have built a fantastic environment here with a great structure.

"The correct principles are in place to move onto the next level and I want to be part of that. I am always keen to learn and improve my game; I want to work hard to benefit the team.

"Things have gone well in pre-season so far. The sessions have been first-class and it’s clear that there is plenty of quality here.

"There is a determination to succeed and our only aim is to win the League."
